Back in 2008 things were not looking too great for the villages of Great and Little Ryburgh. Within the space of a few short months the village lost its pub, village school, post office and shop. Things were looking very bleak indeed. However, the local community faced a choice. They could either accept that their village was going to become just another dormitory settlement - or they could do something about it. Ryburgh chose to act.

With the help from the Norfolk Rural Community Council and the Plunkett Foundation the villagers banded together to form a Community Interest Company, selling shares to the villagers themselves to raise an additional £26,000. With further grants from the Co-Operative Fund and The Esmée Fairburn Foundation the villagers bought premises in the Old Granary building, and full renovated and equiped the new premises. Ryburgh Village Shop, incorporating the Post Office and internet cafe, was opened by Norman Lamb MP in March 2009.

The shop is run by a management committee, employs a number of full and part-time staff, recruited locally, and relies upon the generous involvement of volunteers to carry out its daily activities. To learn more about how the project was carried forward please click here.
